Interview with Josie Scott (vocals)
Interview by Jason Schleweis | 07.10.2004 | Lansing, MI | Common Grounds Festival

Survival Of The Sickest, August 17th, what can you tell us about the new album?
It kicks ass. (Laughter) It’s a bad ass rockin’ record. It’s just us getting back to our roots and why we got in this business in the first place. It’s just a six pack of American whoop-ass.

What kind of elements will be used on the album, or what kind of direction will it take?
It’s hard rock. It’s got something for everybody on it. It’s a real strong rocker. It’s just about our lives. I think the key to song writing is bridging the heart...bridging the gap between your heart and mine. We just talk about our lives, but we talk about it in a way that you can identify with it too or be like yeah, that’s happened to me.

Now I have heard that you talk about the music industry a little bit on the new album, and just your discontent with everything...has this been something that’s been going on for a while now or what?
Oh yeah. Welcome to the gravy train. (Laughter)

Do you feel that there was more pressure writing this album given the success of your first two albums?
We don’t pay attention to all that, that’s just a bunch of fake bullshit. Everybody feels pressure about their sophomore effort, or their junior effort but if you buy into all that bullshit you’ll get crushed in this industry. It’s just a bunch of lies and hype. If you just pay attention to your game and write the best possible material you can, and write it from the heart and be honest you’ll be alright. And that’s all we do.

Do you guys have a video out for your first single, “Survival Of The Sickest” yet?
Naw, we’re going to start working on it on [July] 20th.

Do you know what the story board for that is going to be then?
Yeah, um Wayne Isam is the director. He did “Wild Side” for Motley Crue, and “Girls Girls Girls” from Motley Crue, and he did “Living On A Prayer” for Bon Jovi. He’s like a old school...we wanted to do an old school, 80's rock video that’s just over the top with pyros, fire and chicks and cars. Everybody’s just so afraid of jumping on the bandwagon, or too afraid of taking chances but we wanted to do something that’s kinda old school what we grew up with. Like AC/DC rock shows with fire and bombs and shit.

Now you guys get to give your songs to a lot of video games and movies. Is that something you always look forward to doing? How’s the thrill of being a part of such big budget productions?
Yeah, it’s a total thrill. We love being involved with video games and movies and soundtracks and stuff. It’s just another outlet to get your music out there and get it to make new fans and stuff. And we just did some music on Tiger Woods 2003 and you can type in Superstar and my character will come up!

Now with everything you guys have already accomplished so far in the music industry, what goals do you have for the future of the band or in your personal life?
That’s a good question. I’m doing a movie...I’ve always wanted to break into some acting. I’m doing this movie called Hustle And Flow, it’s a John Singleton film. He did Boyz In The Hood. I’m playing a drug dealer that owns a grocery store in the hood. A little grocery store, a little in-and-out store in the hood and I sell pot to the up and coming rappers.

How did you land that part?
Just keeping my face out there. And keeping the fact that I wanted to get into acting out there. And I just got the opportunity to do it, I went down there and did a screen test for the film and they loved it. So I’m going to start that on the 18th of July, and then “Survival Of The Sickest” is on the 20th. We’ve always as a band had a lot of ideas about directing videos or acting and writing screenplays and keeping journals of what we do on the road and what happens so we can make a movie someday or something like that.

That’s really cool that you guys can get into different creative outlets like that. A lot of bands just stick to music and that’s it, when they could achieve so much more by just getting involved more creatively...
Yeah! For us personally, we gotta keep ourselves busy. Down time is the devil’s playground for us.

Now you discussed a couple years ago, back when Back Into Your System came out, that you were struggling to find a balance between your personal life and your career. Do you think you have found that balance yet?
Oh yeah. Quit doing drugs. Married the woman of my dreams. As soon as I took the blinders off my eyes I found the woman of my dreams.

We know that you treasure your fans a lot, so the last question is just if there was anything you wanted to say to them or comment on in general?
Just that we love them, and this album is a tribute to them. This album is a total tribute to our fans and they will enjoy it from whiskers to tail.
