Boys Night Out Interview - 02.25.2005

Interview with Connor Lovat-Fraser (vocals)
Interview by Jason Schleweis & Rob Todd | 02.25.2005 | Detroit, MI | St. Andrew's Hall

What’s up with the new name Bob Gnarlly?
Oh man! That got out to people? I’m not gonna comment on that. It’s uh...it’s not time yet! (Laughter)

It was on your website...
Was it? Shit! It will be revealed soon. (Laughter)

How come Ben didn’t make it out on the tour?
We’ve honestly been sick as fuck. Since last May we’ve been on tour pretty solid and maybe had all total a month and a half, two months off. So we’ve been getting sick...Rob didn’t make it on our last tour and the same guy from an awesome band called Full Blast filled out on guitar and he came out to play drums this time around. So we just decided to give them some time off so they can get fucking healthy.

So he’s not quitting the band then right? There were some rumors going around on the site that he might be.
Oh there’s always rumors! I mean...(sarcastically while nodding) yes, yes he is! (Laughter) This is my last tour as well! No, I’m just kidding. Actually the band has been as stable as ever, we’re just all ready for a little break.

Are you guys going to be taking a break after this?
Kinda, we have our longest break starting tomorrow since May. We have three weeks off. That’s going to be awesome! In those three weeks I’m going to celebrate my 25th birthday and fuckin just get nuts for a few weeks...and then we go out again.

Does it ever get old?
Awe, dude touring is where my heart’s at. Music is my whole life with the exception of my lovely girlfriend who I love with all my heart. But music is what I love to do.

I know you just made “Make Yourself Sick” about a year ago, but are you already working on new material?
In fury. But because we haven’t really had time off, we haven’t written much of anything yet. That’s why we really want some time off. We’re going to try and work on some stuff after Warped Tour. So yeah, after Warped Tour we are going to try and start writing and we just might have a new song or two for the Saves The Day tour.

What are some of your future goals with the band?
Basically just to keep playing. People always ask us about major labels and stuff like that, but really we aren’t interested. We love Ferret, we love Carl, we love everybody we work with and we’re just happy doing this. Major labels can really screw stuff up. We’ve had close friends that have had serious setbacks because they signed to a major too soon. And you know, when day if we do decide that, it will be one hundred percent on our own terms. We just want to keep touring, put out another record and have some fucking fun.

What are your feelings if you ever do get a chance to go to a major label?
We’re not adverse to it. I just hate the music industry with a fiery passion that few people can understand. Like I hate some of the shit I see and it fucking breaks my heart because this is the love of my life.

How much stuff is force fed and fake produced?
Oh man...unbelievably! Even people that we have worked with have tried to get us to alter what we do and it’s like, “no this isn’t what we got into this for.” I like to grow stupid mustaches every now and again and they were like you gotta stop that the little girls don’t like the moustache. And I’m like “oh what do I care!” (Laughter) I think it’s funny! But no, we love Ferrett and we’re happy where we are.

What is the best aspect of your live show that people should come see?
I just think it’s like five retarded Canadians jumping around like morons. But we’re like best fucking friends. When we go home we’re hanging out. It’s what we do and I think people have misconceptions of people in bands. Like they are separate from the population. But there’s nothing we like more than hanging out with everybody after the show, people that came to the show and hopefully the best thing is we are doing this because we love it and they will like that.

That’s one thing we have realized doing the magazine, at first you look at musicians as being separate or better people, but then after so many interviews you realize that you guys are just like anyone else.
I know! And I can’t hang with that, some people are like it’s such an honor. I’m like “whoa whoa whoa!” No it isn’t, I’m an idiot! (Laughter) I just happen to play in a band, it shouldn’t make any difference. We just love this so much. And not to say I don’t appreciate it or anything, like when the people get the tattoos and stuff, that blows my fuckin’ mind but like I don’t even have a Boys Night Out tattoo and I’m in the band. I want one, but I can’t afford that shit. Hopefully they will see we’re doing this because we love it and we’re having fun not because we’re trying to get rich.

Now you guys named your album after going two hundred percent all the time, never half doing anything. Do you think that has helped you to win over more fans?
You know, I hope so. There’s no faking, I cough up blood every morning. And some days like right now I can barely talk. But no matter what I’ll go out and fucking sing until I can’t do it anymore. So yeah, we go until basically our bodies collapse and hopefully people are into that. If people are coming to the show we want to give them something to watch so we run around and punch each other in the nuts and jump all over the place. (Laughter) If they wanted to just hear the music they could go and put on the CD.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard of Boys Night Out before?
I really don’t know. We’re happy just being a punk rock band. Just stoner punk rock I guess. (Laughter) No, I don’t know I guess I just hate all that subject genre stuff. It gets to be a little too much. So if people like fast music and they like to sing along then punk rock shit I guess.

You guys just released the single and video for “Punched In The Nose” and it might be to early to tell but are you guys going to releasing any more singles off the album or what do you have planned with that?
We’ve been talking about that and IF, a big if, we do another video it’ll be something...the video we made is very much us. We knew exactly what we wanted and stuff like that but it was still a little to stale for what we’re actually all about. So the next one if we do it will be a lot more retarded, a lot more stupid, and a lot more fun hopefully. We’ll see.

What would be a reason you wouldn’t do it?
Just it’s not the sort of aspect we’re looking at. Getting MTV play and stuff, I mean we appreciate it when people request it but it’s not us. We’re not looking to be the next Good Charlotte or anything. We’re just looking to have fun. But I like Good Charlotte...I know! I know! (laughter) But I think they’re a good band!

Just don’t ever say that on stage.
Naw! (Laughter) I might get my ass kicked. I’d be like “um I’m just kidding!” (Laughter)

Down to the last question, is there anything you wanted to tell us that we didn’t ask?
Word! I just want you to know that Ben is not quitting the band. Nobody’s quitting the band! (Laughter) And that our friend Andy Lewis who filled in for Ben is from an awesome band called The Full Blast go check that shit out. Go request our video, you might as well we made it. And I guess that’s it man. Thanks so very much!
