Fall Out Boy Interview - 07.31.2005
Interview with Pete Wentz (bass), Patrick Stump (vocals), Joe Trohman (guitar), and Andy Hurley (drums)Interview by Jason Schleweis | 07.31.2005 | Pontiac, MI | Silverdome
You guys have a new video coming out soon for the song “Dance, Dance” but there’s not been much word on what the story board for that will be like. Any word on what to expect yet? Pete: We’ve pretty much got the treatment worked out, and it’s going to be a lot bigger than [“Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down”] and I think we might do it in a couple parts...like our buddy R. Kelly. (Laughter) I dunno, I don’t want to let the treatment out yet though!
You’ve also mentioned in a journal entry before that you were looking for MTV to sponsor a free show for all of your fans. Is that still in the works or will it happen at all?
Pete: We’re still asking for it!
How does it feel for you guys to be nominated at the VMA’s for the MTV2 Award?
Joe: It’s awesome! I used to joke around with friends about going to the VMA’s and stuff and now we’re actually going. I jinxed myself in a good way!
You guys have this year just blown up and come out of nowhere in a sense. And with everything you’ve accomplished so far this year, what else is there for you to do next year or what else is there to shoot for still?
Pete: I think that the problem when bands look to far forward is they start backpedalling and believing their own hype, so we try not to think into the future. Hopefully we’re still doing something exciting and seeing new places that we haven’t seen before and going on tour with bands we look up to.
And who are some of those bands you’d like to go on tour with now?
Pete: I think Metallica maybe! (Laughter) I dunno.
Maybe they’ll have a reunion tour!
Pete: We definitely actually for real want to tour with Green Day.
How is Warped Tour this year actually being on a main stage as opposed to the much smaller stage you were on last year?
Andy: It’s really cool, last year we played the Maurice stage which was awesome. But it actually got shut down here (Pontiac, MI) but playing the main stage has been awesome. There’s been a lot of kids coming out and singing every word. It’s unreal; you don’t expect that ever.
You guys are also headlining the Nintendo Fusion Tour this fall. How does it feel to be a part of that tour with so many other great bands that are widely respected in the scene today, yet they are all opening up for you?
Pat: Those were bands that we kind of wanted to hang out with and have been wanting to tour with for a while. So now we’re finally getting to go out with them on the headlining tour and take a lot of those dudes out and enjoy their company.
Is it weird though having bands of that caliber play before you now considering how you guys never meant for Fall Out Boy to be this huge?
Pete: I don’t think it’s awkward at all because bands are on different cycles and you’re at your peak when other bands are kind of not, and those bands I’m sure we could be going out with them at some point too. So I don’t think it’s weird at all; and it’s going to be really cool because bands like Panic! At The Disco get to go out on their first tour and be a part of five bands. But all the other bands I’m sure we could end up going out with and they’re just bands we’re friends with.
This one is directed towards you Pete. The last time we spoke you said that you were working on a new side project or some new material with William of The Academy Is... but there wasn’t much word on what you were actually doing at the time. Is there anything new to add to that now?
Pete: Oh yeah, it’s actually not a side project. I know a lot of people thought it was, it kinda got said that it was. Me and him are just kind of writing this thing back and forth where I’ll write a chapter and he’ll write a chapter. And I don’t know if it will ever see the light of day or just like me and him kind of doing it because I’m not sure how much the rest of the world would even be interested. But it is not another band. It’s just two friends goofing around.
Alright, that’s all we’ve got this time around for you guys. Any last comments to add?
Andy: Don’t do drugs.
Joe: But...do them safely. (Laughter)
Pete: I don’t got anything.
Pat: I just woke up.
Pete: We all just woke up so we’re doing our best! (Laughter)
