Review
Pop-punk’s reigning band ended up on the map after the huge reception of their song “Perfect,” that ended up as an anthem for young kids everywhere; mainly being the middle school screaming girls that can’t get enough of Pierre and his fellow Simple Plan band mates. Needless to say, Still Not Getting Any hasn’t changed direction or demographic at all; album opener “Shut Up” sets the ridiculously commercial pop sound that’ll follow on the rest of the album.
Perhaps not surprisingly, if we hadn’t told you that this is in fact the new Simple Plan album, it could be easily mistaken for their first record, No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls. Evolution? Non existent. Sound? You’ve heard it all before. Tone? Yes, Pierre still sings in such a high pitch we’re almost convinced only dogs can hear him. Lyrically? The same old regret, and self pity swallow every song with an unhealthy dose of remorse.
The album ends up being a little disappointing; there isn’t really a single song that stands out as unique or above the rest. And take our word for it, there isn’t anything worse than a bland, repetitive mix of pop.
